A coating does not correct paint. Applied over contamination or defects, it preserves them. ISA therefore requires at least a suitable finishing polish, including for new vehicles, with the level determined by the paint condition.
Both terms describe the same thing: a silica layer applied to prepared clear coat, which hardens and changes how the surface behaves. You will come across both. In the workshop we say “ceramic protection”, because it says what the layer does and what it does not: it protects and makes maintenance easier, it repairs nothing, fills no scratch and replaces no PPF film.
Ceramic protection is never chosen on its own: both its price and its result depend on the polishing level it is applied over. That level is confirmed after inspection, never in advance.

The level of preparation depends on the size of the vehicle and the condition of the paint. It is confirmed by quotation after inspection, before any work.
A ceramic coating locks in the condition it finds the paint in. Everything therefore happens before application: that preparation decides what the protection will seal for several years.
The clear coat is examined panel by panel under inspection lighting, and its thickness measured wherever the surface and the gauge allow a reliable reading. That reading sets the correction level available: a coating never recovers material that is no longer there.
Preparation wash, then chemical and mechanical decontamination. Iron particles, tar and embedded residues have to go before polishing: sealed under a coating, they stay trapped there for its whole service life.
The agreed level is carried out before application. It is the only step that genuinely improves the state of the paint; the coating simply locks in what it finds. A minimum polish stays mandatory, including on a new car, whose paint can already show defects.
Polishing oils are removed from the surface, then every panel is checked again under raking light. Paint that is still oily prevents the coating from bonding properly and leaves areas that lose their water repellency earlier than the rest.
Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light is applied panel by panel, then topped with Gtechniq EXO v5. The car then stays off the road for 24 to 48 hours, and no washing is possible during the first seven days.

Ceramic protection changes how the surface behaves, not what the paint is. The distinction avoids the two most common misunderstandings.
Most of what ceramic protection costs is decided before it is applied: the condition of the clear coat dictates the preparatory polishing, and that alone separates a finishing preparation from a full correction. Then come the surfaces you want protected — wheels, glass, plastics — and the product chosen.
